Abstract

Based on a discussion of George Orwell's well-known novel, 1984, this paper seeks to undertake a critical examination of the ever ambivalent "dialogue" between political power, technological development and the freedom of the individual. To do so, it takes as its point of reference some of the often highly evocative ideas, images and situations that Orwell presents and develops in this work. The novel, victim of a somewhat frivolous and superficial interpretation in recent years (in particular, as regards the figure of "Big Brother"), raises with considerable lucidity, and from a dramatic point of view, a number of questions that should be of interest to all responsible citizens today.
