Abstract

En l'estudi de qualsevol substància medicamentosa és gairebé un pas obligat el càlcul de la dosi letal cinquanta, que hom defineix com aquella dosi que produeix la mort del 50% dels animals tractats. Per dur a terme aquesta determinació a partir dels resultats experimentats, s'han desenvolupat, ja fa temps, diversos mètodes de càlcul. La base conceptual d'aquests mètodes no ha millorat gaire en els últims anys, ja que els avenços tecnològics no han incidit en els seus plantejaments matemàtics i estadístics; val a dir que un dels mètodes més emprats actualment és de l'any 1949. D'altra banda, el que realment ha suposat una gran millora ha estat el perfeccionament i la simplificació de l'ús d'ordinadors mitjans i petits. Això ha permès la utilització de mètodes de càlcul numèric que incrementen considerablement la precisió dels càlculs, cosa en la qual fa uns anys no es pensava degut a la seva complexitat. En el nostre cas, aquests mètodes els hem aplicat per a realitzar totes aquelles operacions de transformació d'unitats o de càlculs que fins ara es feien mitjançant taules o nomogrames. De bell antuvi realitzarem una petita revisió històrica dels mètodes més usuals, assenyalant el que nosaltres hem triat.
