Libia: conflicto interno y flujos de migración

Abstract

[eng] The present Bachelor’s thesis is a summary of the political, social and military situation in Libya in 2016. The 2011 “Arab Spring” set in force a civil war in which a great number of actors and parties has been involved and which brought the country close to collapse. The precarious situation in terms of security and the absence of functioning political and administrative institutions additionally aggravated migration flows towards Europe. The descriptive character of this work feeds itself by intense interdisciplinary and multilingual research. The methodology is primarily based on newspaper and academic articles from fields such as political science, history, economics and sociology. The results confirm the expectations in most parts: It is obvious that Libya won’t recover itself, neither economically nor politically, without a functioning and unified administration and the military control over its territory. In this very context, the migrants’ hopeless situation neither will improve, as actually they are basically without rights and do suffer from arbitrariness by public authorities. What should be discussed is the historical heritage and conception of the former Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi: indeed, he governed his country against Western principles of democracy, but helped to gain a certain degree of wealth, security and progress.
