Abstract

El pie equino por disfunción muscular es una patología que se encuentra frecuentemente en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI). Tras un ingreso en UCI, los músculos pierden su tensión normal y se debilitan dificultando la recuperación del paciente. La ventilación mecánica y la medicación que se administra en UCI son factores que ayudan a la aparición de debilidad muscular . Un conjunto de cambios morfológicos, vasculares, alteraciones mitocondriales y metabólicas conducen a que la musculatura se debilite, lo que provoca la aparición de un pie equino, pero hacen falta nuevas líneas de investigación para verificar dicha hipótesis ya que no se ha encontrado evidencia científica que relacione la aparición de la debilidad muscular con el pie equino. La prevención juega un papel importante para que paciente tenga una buena recuperación y pueda volver a su vida cotidiana. La administración de ciertos medicamentos, nutrición parenteral y el control de la glicemia puede ayudar a la prevención, aunque siempre requiere tratamiento fisioterapéutico. Para ello existen varias estrategias: cambios posturales, ejercicios pasivos y activos, sentarse en una silla y caminar. La introducción de un podólogo en el área asistencial podría ayudar a comprensión de pie equino y elaborar nuevas formas de prevención mas efectivas.
