In order to achieve a peaceful coexistence between predators and human activities, it is essential to know not only the distribution of large carnivores and the extent of the damage caused by them, but also the point of view and the needs and concerns of the categories most affected by their presence, such as farmers and beekeepers. On the basis of this premise, we carried out a survey among farmers who make use of alpine summer ranges (n=46) and beekeepers (n=21) in Valle Camonica, an alpine valley which has been recently recolonized by wolves and bears. Predation events were more frequent in alpine pastures than in apiaries; however, these differences are not significant and they do not seem sufficient to explain the significantly more negative perception of predators by farmers compared to beekeepers. Beekeepers showed a greater interest in improving their knowledge about the problem, as well as in funding and implementation of prevention strategies, while farmers were more in favour of relocations and culling, both for wolves and for bears.
