The book profiles Maria Callas (1923-1976) as a singer-actress, illustrating her artistic journey through the directors with whom she collaborated during her career, from her Athenian years to her encounter with her beloved Pasolini. From Wallmann to Visconti, from Zeffirelli to Pavlova: from all of them the celebrated soprano absorbed indications and advice, reinterpreting them according to her own sensitivity and experience. Every recitative detail, gesture, movement was critically analysed by her, repeated and perfected in long rehearsals, as is usually done on the prose stage. The unequalled strength of her interpretations thus lies in the perfect fusion of singing and theatrical gesture. The central role that Maria Callas played in the development of directing in opera theatre thus emerges.
