Idrografia dantesca. From the livid swamps to the river of light

Abstract

The article analyses the rivers of the afterworld. They are a notable element of the infernal landscape and in the first cantica Dante regulates a fluid and chaotic matter, inherited from his favourite classical authors, canalizing the Tartarian waters in a precise hydrographic system, which is in the meantime a geographical element and a tool of punishment. The Purgatory’s mountain has little water, apart from its summit, where Dante confronts, and outdistance himself from, the geography of the biblical Genesis. The presence of the river is surprising – in the form of the river of light – in the empyrean, which Dante imagines outside of space and time. With a little bit of fantasy – and with the eyes empowered by the conquests of science – we could imagine that the rippling of the river is the curving of spacetime that propagates as a gravitational wave.
