Repeated exposure of the intestinal microbiome to antibiotics, which are essential in the control of diseases, can cause a decrease in their effectiveness and the development of multi-resistant bacterial populations with serious problem, not only of clinical and therapeutic order. In addition, antibiotics can also have damaging effects on the ecology of commensal species of enteric flora. The development of an intrinsic resistance in the non-pathogenic bacteria may also be a reservoir for the lateral transfer of the resistance genes. The evaluation of the problem in interpecific perspective animal-man is the only way to find an effective long term solution.
