This article provides a survey of current literature on the origins and evolving nature and understandings of political discourse, with a special emphasis on rhetoric, discursive strategies and the increasing mediatization, personalization and spectacularization of the political arena. It also discusses the issue of collective authorship in the writing of political speeches, the role of performance and reception. The last part of the article focuses on public speech, and the wider problem of addressing contemporary audiences.
