La Leishmaniosi : considerazioni

Abstract

La Leishmaniosi, malattia parassitaria descritta per la prima volta nell’uomo da Cunningham nel 1885 in India, è estremamente diffusa e legata sia alla presenza del flebotomo che la trasmette sia a quella dell’ospite definitivo, mammifero domestico e/o selvatico, che diventa il “serbatoio” dell’infezione. Il cane svolge un ruolo importante nel ciclo biologico del protozoo e lo stretto rapporto esistente tra gli uomini e i cani, l’aumento della popolazione canina, unitamente al fenomeno del randagismo, accrescono la pericolosità della trasmissione della malattia. L’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, sensibilizzata dal peso che tale problema riveste a livello socio-economico, ha individuato nella precocità della diagnosi e nella tempestività del trattamento la possibilità di contenere la malattia. Dall’ultimo congresso mondiale sulla Leishmaniosi è emersa l’importanza di attuare le misure preventive nei confronti del flebotomo, tuttavia il futuro della lotta a tale zoonosi sarà l’allestimento di un vaccino, anche se ancorain fase di studio.
