The paper describes the implementation of a new medical instrument for acquiring and analyzing phonocardiac signals with embedded cardiac diseases identification capabilities. The system is based on a dual-microphone electronic stethoscope integrating digital signal-processing functionalities to reduce environmental noise and to preprocess the heart beat for feature-extraction purposes. A novel approach based on a fuzzy logic inferential engine has been applied to the cardiac sound segmentation to support automatic disease identification.
