Abstract

El 12 de febrero de 1910 aparece en el Daily Mirror la fotografía de la visita del emperador de Etiopía y otros altos dignatarios al acorazado Dreadnought. Se ve a cuatro hombres negros, con ropajes ricamente decorados y turbantes relucientes, y a dos hombres blancos de pie, con elegantes túnicas y sombreros. Esta visita diplomática es, sin embargo, una broma organizada para burlarse de la Armada inglesa. Y, broma dentro de la broma, uno de los falsos etíopes ni siquiera es un hombre: la primera por la izquierda, de hecho, no es otra que Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) disfrazada. Este famoso episodio nos permite captar algunas de las características claves de la vida y obra de la autora británica: el poder de la risa y el ridículo, la crítica radical del nacionalismo y el imperialismo, o la posibilidad de superar y mezclar las barreras de género. A través de estas guías básicas, es posible reconocer a Woolf como una intelectual refinada capaz de cuestionar las formas clásicas de la teoría y la política. Y, a partir de Una habitación propia (1929) y Tres guineas (1938), la lectura de sus obras permite comprender qué significaba ser mujer en un mundo de hombres como el de la primera mitad del siglo XX, cómo es posible pensar y trabajar por la paz y contra la guerra, y por qué el distanciamiento puede ser una postura política para conseguir, finalmente, divisar el cielo.
