Abstract

In the volume ‘Le forme brevi’ della narrativa edited by Elisabetta Menetti (Carocci 2019) an essay by Giulio Iacoli draws attention to the ‘Containers of short forms in the second half of the twentieth century’, suggesting the need to ‘reopen the meaning of the “short form” by means of the dynamic relationship that it establishes, in an unprecedented or in any case experimental, highly creative manner, with its container, throughout the second half of the twentieth century, bearing the signs of the revival of other genres or of hybridisation with these’ (p. 223), in particular with the novel genre. The question involves the indexical structures that govern the dispositio of short texts and takes into account first of all their textual status, in terms of genre or narrative structures, or combinatorial and macro-textual (or polytextual) logic. In the proposed intervention, these methods of investigation are related to the study of the materiality of the editions in which the texts under consideration are transmitted, in particular in relation to the concept of intentio editionis proposed by Alberto Cadioli in ‘Le diverse pagine’ (Il Saggiatore, 2012) and in relation to the perspective of authorial philology and variant criticism, believing that the intersection of these perspectives allows for an effective hermeneutic synthesis. Some of Italo Calvino's works are considered as case studies, or rather, some first editions of some of his collections of texts, on which it is also possible to question whether or not they should be considered works in all respects, according to Franco Brioschi's definition (‘La mappa dell'impero’, il Saggiatore, 1983).
