Abstract

This essay deals with the many problems a proverb collector encounters when organizing proverbs into a paremiographical dictionary. It states the different criteria used by the main collectors of the Spanish and Italian paremiographical tradition, and focuses on the two main lexicographical approaches: the onomasiological and the semasiological. A case study is included by which we intend to show the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Moreover, this paper reports on the results of the analyses of most Spanish and Italian collections and how these results present evidence of the heterogeneity of these classifications. Therefore, we maintain that it is necessary to propose a classification system that is as objective as possible and available in different languages.
