Abstract

Las máscaras médicas que se han impuesto como dispositivo para contrarrestar el contagio del COVID ‘19 afectan en gran medida a la presentación y percepción del rostro, alterando radicalmen- te su fenomenología y semiótica, y reduciendo su singularidad. La producción cultural global ha reaccionado a menudo ante estas nuevas limitaciones, subrayando la importancia ética de la totalidad y la singularidad del rostro frente a cual quier intento de fragmentación, segmentación y clasificación. El artículo propone una lectura semiótica general de las tendencias culturales de las sociedades contemporáneas que operan, por el contrario, hacia una mercantilización del rostro, y que la pandemia del COVID ́19 no ha hecho sino acentuar. El artículo se centra, en particular, en los nuevos procesos automáticos de procesamiento de imágenes faciales, cuya retórica de logros tecnológicos desacredita. El artículo concluye sugiriendo que la protección y la liberación del rostro como baluarte de la humanidad solo puede lograrse previendo una nueva era llamada el “Prosopoceno”, que garantizaría un rostro inalienable a toda forma de vida frente a la desfiguración humana o robótica.
