Abstract

Le università rappresentano una delle più originali e longeve “novità” introdotte dal Medioevo: in esse si ritrovano sia elementi di continuità con i precedenti centri di alta istruzione e con i saperi del mondo classico greco-latino sia l’esito culturale delle spinte all’associazionismo diffuse in molti segmenti della società urbana. Il volume ripercorre le esperienze universitarie che negli ultimi decenni del xii secolo presero forma nelle dinamiche città dell’Italia centro-settentrionale segnando un riferimento istituzionale e scientifico nel panorama scolastico europeo e concorrendo in modo determinante alla precisazione di un sapere omogeneo e di una percezione di appartenenza a una comune area culturale. Mette in luce le funzioni di raccordo dei flussi internazionali di studenti e di maestri, di definizione di modelli culturali e di pratiche didattiche, di formazione delle élites intellettuali che assegnarono alle università un influente ruolo negli assetti sociali e politici dei luoghi di potere e dei quadri della Chiesa. La storia del pensiero, delle singole discipline, delle realtà politico-sociali costituisce così il fondale che chiude la scena in cui, divise tra vocazione “universalistica” e orizzonte cittadino, agirono le università.
