In this chapter we shall focus on the two best described varieties of the English language, British English and American English, and their respective pronunciation standards, Received Pronunciation (RP) or BBC pronunciation and General American. In this chapter the general terms British English (BrE) and American English (AmE) will be used, as they are considered to be the labels most frequently used by Italians to refer to these varieties.
