Simulation of weedy rice seedbank dynamics under different rice system scenario

Abstract

Purpose: A model was used to predict weedy rice seedbank dynamics over time in rice fields across a range of weedy rice control strategies starting from an initial seedbank of 1100 seeds m-2 and included estimated growth parameters of rice and weedy rice both for plants in pure stand and in competition. Approach and methods used: Eight scenarios were considered: A) rice monoculture with Clearfield® variety (CL) and non- Clearfield® variety (NCL) in alternate years; B) two years of CL, followed by one year with NCL; C) three years of CL followed by one year of NCL; D) rice monoculture with only CL; E) rice monoculture with only NCL; F) two years of CL followed by one year of soybean (S), and then by an additional year with NCL; G) one year S followed by two years of CL, and then by one year of NCL; H) two years of S followed by two years of CL. Weedy rice control is based on use of imazamox (98.5% efficacy) in CL, traditional practices, such as stale seedbed and pre-sowing herbicides (90% efficacy) in NCL and post emergence herbicides (100% efficacy) in S. Key results: Simulations indicated that in all cases where CL varieties were used in rice monoculture weedy rice seedbank reduced gradually, allowing a complete depletion after 17, 13, 11, and 9 years in scenarios A), B), C), and D) respectively. In NCL monoculture (E), seedbank increased up to 9000 seeds m-2 after 10 years. Seedbank reduced significantly with crop rotation (F, G, H), giving a complete depletion in about 10 years. Synthesis and Applications: The results of the simulations indicated that the introduction of a rotational crop can be crucial for obtaining a notable and relatively fast reduction of weedy rice seedbank.
