Eusebio di Cesarea storico e agiografo della persecuzione in Palestina

Abstract

Le due versioni dei Martiri della Palestina(=MP) di Eusebio di Cesarea sono state studiate prevalentemente in relazione alla Storia ecclesiastica (=HE ), per ricostruire la scuola di Panfilo a Cesarea e la storia della biblioteca di quella stessa città. L’articolo intende richiamare l’attenzione su aspetti meno studiati. L’articolo analizza i MP nel contesto della letteratura martirologica precedente e ne mette in luce i tratti caratteristici; li studia come testimonianze storiche sulla situazione delle Chiese di Palestina durante la persecuzione di Diocleziano; investiga l’attendibilità della testimonianza di Eusebio; analizza in particolare i bioi di Affiano e di Panfilo mettendo in luce le strategie retoriche con cui Eusebio trasforma gli esponenti della “scuola di Cesarea” in martiri della Chiesa di Cesarea; individua nel racconto di Eusebio sul martirio di Panfilo e dei suoi “compagni” il tentativo di indicare nei dodici martiri di Cesarea, fra cui spicca Panfilo, sacerdote martire e maestro di martiri, l’immagine della vera Chiesa, l’erede dei patriarchi, dei profeti, degli apostoli, come modello ideale per la Chiesa costantiniana.
