Abstract

All’interno dei generi editoriali di larga circolazione nell’Italia moderna la produzione cavalleresca costituisce un caso particolarmente interessante. In un paese ove l’alfabeto rimaneva una conquista difficile, e le letture amene non erano certo incoraggiate, il gran numero di esemplari circolanti rappresenta un risultato editoriale degno di nota. Ma al di là della rilevanza del dato materiale, il fenomeno è significativo perché induce a revocare in dubbio interpretazioni troppo schematiche giocate su concetti antinomici (alto\basso, elitario\popolare, colto\incolto), ponendo agli studiosi - letterati, storici, specialisti del libro - il problema di un insieme di testi che circolavano nelle corti come nelle piazze ed erano gustati dai gentiluomini come dai rustici e dai plebei. Il focus del saggio si dispiega su quattro punti: la fortuna: durata nel tempo, ampia diffusione e trasversalità sociale dell’apprezzamento; l’identità cangiante, tra trasformismo e manipolazioni; l’irriducibile vitalità, grazie a usi e riusi diversi; e infine il parziale inabissamento, che comporta una ricerca delle fonti in grado di intercettare i testi scomparsi.
