Though mainly attested in funerary contexts, the Amduat appears as a cosmographic treatise in which the deceased are rarely visible. This trend can be observed in most of the numerous papyri from the Third Intermediate Period containing Underworld books. The majority of them are anonymous or only mention their owner in the etiquette, the initial vignette.About a quarter of the manuscripts feature much more varied forms of personalisation – for example, the inscription of passages from the Book of the Dead, of the name or even the image of the beneficiaries, who may be the subject of a metadiscourse reformulating the main text for their benefit. These personalisation elements are most often added in liminal spaces by a hand distinct from the one that wrote the rest of the manuscript. These paraiconotextual additions, perhaps made in a ritual setting, emphasise the inscription of the deceased within the cosmographic treatise.
