Abstract

La physiologie de la phonation correspond à l'ensemble des mécanismes qui permettent l'apparition d'une vibration sur le bord libre des cordes vocales. Il s'agit du mécanisme sonore initial qui est ensuite soumis au filtrage du pharynx et de la cavité buccale pour être transformé en voyelles et en consonnes voisées. Le larynx, et en particulier les cordes vocales, sont au centre du dispositif de production de la voix. Lors de la phase préphonatoire préparatoire, les muscles et les cartilages du larynx rapprochent les cordes vocales les unes des autres (position phonatoire), ce qui a pour effet de rétrécir la filière respiratoire. L'air contenu dans les poumons est ensuite propulsé par une expiration active à travers les cordes vocales. Les caractéristiques anatomiques des cordes vocales permettent, grâce à leur structure feuilletée, une vibration passive de la muqueuse du bord libre sous l'influence de l'air phonatoire. Les lois physiques qui règlent le fonctionnement passif de la muqueuse font l'objet de développements pour en permettre une compréhension aisée par le lecteur non spécialiste des questions physiques. La voix est un phénomène acoustique et aérodynamique extrêmement adaptable pour répondre aux nécessités de la communication parlée. Une place importante est faite aux mécanismes du réglage de la hauteur et de l'intensité de la voix, ainsi qu'à leurs rapports avec les différentes circonstances cliniques.
