La fluidoterapia en el caballo con cólico

Abstract

Colic of gastrointestinal origin is a very common pathology in equine practice. Regardless of the origin of the pain, these animals usually present varying degrees of dehydration, hypovolemia, alterations in electrolyte and acid-base balance, which makes fluid therapy planning and monitoring sometimes a real challenge for the veterinarian. In certain types of colic, overhydration is an essential part of treatment. Confronted with these types of cases, the veterinarian must decide whether or not an animal needs fluid therapy, and if so, decide the route of administration, choose the most appropriate type of fluids and calculate the volume and speed of administration. He/she should also plan a follow-up that allows to monitor the effects of the fluid therapy and detect the need to modify it. This article attempts to address in a practical way the steps to evaluate, plan and conveniently monitor fluid therapy in horses with colic.
