Abstract

Des naissances rationnellement planifiées, la contraception technologique comme règle, l’avortement comme exception : ces normes de la « modernité » reproductive occidentale ont pu être définies par contraste avec l’« avant » et l’« ailleurs » d’une fécondité « prétransition démographique » incontrôlée. Toutefois, de nombreux travaux permettent de déconstruire cette opposition tradition/modernité, ainsi que la hiérarchisation moralisatrice entre la contraception et l’avortement. Par ailleurs, pour comprendre l’histoire de la politisation de la régulation des naissances – de Malthus au « planning familial » et aux « droits reproductifs », en passant par l’eugénisme et le féminisme –, il importe de prendre en compte non seulement des enjeux de genre, mais aussi de classe et de race. Ces politisations prennent des significations différentes selon les aires géographiques et les époques, et ont donné matière à diverses politiques d’interdiction, d’imposition ou d’encadrement du contrôle des naissances, ciblant avant tout les femmes. La circulation de modèles hégémoniques joue un rôle important : par exemple, au Sud, on peut constater la répression du contrôle des naissances via la colonisation, puis des politiques de diffusion de la contraception via les organisations internationales, tandis que les pays sous influence soviétique ont été les pionniers de la légalisation de l’avortement.
