A l'échelle internationale la qualité et la durabilité de la gestion forestière sont généralement analysées à partir de critères et indicateurs (C/I) définis lors des conférences interministérielles portant sur la protection des forêts. La Conférence d'Helsinki (1993) est à l'origine des premières listes d'indicateurs qui se sont enrichies et affinées au cours du temps (Lisbonne 1998, Vienne 2003, etc.).
