Abstract

La bibliothèque imaginée par Aby Warburg est à plusieurs égards le reflet d’une pensée parmi les plus originales que l’histoire de l’art ait connu. On connaît généralement cette bibliothèque grâce au témoignage d’Ernst Cassirer qui voyait s’y déployer un « ensemble de problèmes ». Le philosophe ne cache pas l’angoisse qu’il ressentit d’abord face à ce labyrinthe de livres dont l’organisation lui échappait. Warburg avait fait graver à l’entrée de sa bibliothèque le mot Mnémosyne, "mémoire" en grec. Il considérait lui-même la bibliothèque comme son œuvre la plus importante. L’ordre de classement des livres, qu’il révisait presque chaque jour, devait sembler chaotique pour qui n’était pas familier de l’« espace de pensée » [Denkraum] warburgien. Pas de classement par discipline ou de classement chronologique, mais un classement thématique qui obéissait à la « loi de bon voisinage ». La bibliothèque Warburg, immense fonds de mémoire culturelle où les savoirs se décloisonnaient, accompagnait la recherche de manière inédite. Véritable laboratoire pratique où le savoir était mis à l’épreuve, la salle de lecture en ellipse de la bibliothèque constituait comme une « arène » où les chercheurs mettaient à profit les livres et leur agencement si particulier.
