La aspirina y las soluciones de boratos para preservar madera

Abstract

Desde hace muchos años, en Estados Unidos y principalmente en países europeos, el boro se ha venido utilizando como sustancia preservante para madera contra hongos de pudrición e insectos, en especial termitas. Se aplica en varias formulaciones tanto como soluciones de ácido bórico, así como soluciones de bórax (borato de sodio) y poliboratos (aminopoliborato y otros). A pesar de tener la desventaja de que no se fija en la madera y se puede perder en un lapso de 3 a 5 años si la madera está expuesta a la intemperie, presenta una serie de ventajas sobre otras sustancias preservantes tradicionales. El boro es soluble en agua y poco reactivo, por lo que es altamente difusivo en madera húmeda, es incoloro, por lo que se prefiere por sobre otras sustancias que cambian el color en la madera. Sin embargo, esta última característica, hace que sea imposible de notar hasta donde penetró el boro.
