Problemas fitosanitarios del jaúl (Alnus acuminata Kunth) en Costa Rica

Abstract

El jaúl (Alnus acuminata Kunth) es una especie forestal nativa de América Central y América del Sur. En Costa Rica se cultiva en masas puras ó en sistemas agroforestales, ya que su ritmo de crecimiento es muy rápido. En las bases de datos del Laboratorio de Protección Forestal del Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, se informa que en Costa Rica, hasta el año 2007, se reportan 57 agentes causales que provocan daños en jaúl, de los cuales 42 son insectos (73,7%), 13 patógenos (22,8%) y 2 vertebrados (3,5%). El 72% de los daños se reportan en el follaje y el 11% en fuste (corteza y xilema). Se describen los problemas de mayor impacto; en el ápice Phomopsis sp.; en el follaje la roya Melampsoridium alni y los insectos Tina sp., Ceraspis brunneipennis, Macrodactylus sp., Nodonota irazuensis, Brachipnoea sp. y Corythucha sp., y en el fuste el cancro por Botryosphaeria dothidea, el descortezador Scolytodes alni y el barrenador Phassus triangularis.
