Abstract

La mora es un frutal que pertenece a la familia de las Rosáceas. Su origen se encuentra en las regiones templadas de Eurasia y América del Norte, sin embargo, el género Rubus se ha expandido en las tierras altas de los trópicos, generalmente entre los 1700 y 3000 m s n m. En Costa Rica se reconocen tres variedades silvestres, y se les clasifica de mayor a menor grado de importancia en: ”Vino”, “Negrita” y Caballo”. La Zona de los Santos es la zona que cuenta con la mayor área productora del país (300-500 Has aproximadamente) Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería,1992). La mora silvestre consiste en una planta de raíz perenne y tallos bianuales, largos, espinosos, los cuales en algunas ocasiones alcanzan más de cuatro metros de longitud. Las hojas por lo general se componen de tres folíolos de bordes dentados. Las flores crecen en racimos, cada flor tiene numerosos estambres y gineceos. El fruto es un agregado formado por un conjunto de drupas suculentas (multidrupas) en cuyo interior se localiza una semilla, todas ellas agregadas a un receptáculo carnoso (León, 1987, Escoto 1994).
