Abstract

Durante medio siglo hemos mantenido el entusiasmo por las investigaciones científicas, alentados siempre por diversos especialistas europeos y americanos, que sería prolijo enumerar; mas tratando de auxiliar los trabajos de unos y otros hemos tenido que ocuparnos de variados ramos de las Ciencias Naturales y Antropológicas, dejando dispersos en el curso de la vida muchos artículos publicados en revistas y periódicos. Algunos de esos escritos tienen un carácter educativo y llenaron su misión oportunamente; otros tienen un tinte literario, y, como los ramos de flores, se marchitan luego, sin que se conserve de ellos siquiera su recuerdo. El objeto de estas páginas es reunir en un volumen pequeño nuestras impresiones de la Naturaleza, y la interpretación que le dieron quizá los antiguos pobladores de este rinconcito americano, cuya cultura pudiera tener su origen en la India o en la Atlántida, pues sólo sabemos que estamos influenciados por los europeos en los últimos años, como lo estuvieron los indios por los Caribes del Sur, en la región Atlántica, y los Chorotegas del Norte en la vertiente del Pacífico. El ambiente y la posición geográfica de Costa Rica parecen indicar este territorio como lugar propicio para la mezcla de las razas y de la cultura de todos . los pueblos.
