Abstract

Se usa una versión numérica en diferencias finitas del modelo matemático de Thomann para la predicción del nivel de oxígeno disuelto (DO) y del nivel de demanda de oxígeno disuelto (BOD) debidos a descargas municipales en nueve puntos localizados a lo largo del Golfo. Se asume que el agente dispersivo es la marea con su flujo y reflujo. El modelo incluye la acción convectiva del agua dulce y el decaimiento de la materia orgánica. Se concluye que el gran volumen del prisma de marea del Golfo posibilita descargas mucho mayores que las debidas a una ciudad con la población de Puntarenas, sin producir efectos drásticos en los niveles globales de oxígeno disuelto. Debido a la plasticidad del modelo será posible en un futuro próximo su uso en la predicción de otros parámetros con distribuciones similarmente dependientes de las mareas como nitratos, nitritos, fosfatos, cloruros y otras sustancias químicas provenientes de futuras industrias costeras o descargas debidas a barcos mercantes. El modelo puede ser usado también en otros cuerpos de agua costeros de importancia para el país como esteros, estuarios y el Golfo Dulce.
