La madera de duramen es la parte más importante del árbol en Tectona grandis L.f. Aunque existen varios modelos de predicción de volumen total (albura y duramen) en esta especie, no existen modelos de predicción de duramen únicamente. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue desarrollar modelos matemáticos para predecir la altura máxima del duramen (HWh), el diámetro (HWdiameter), porcentaje (HWpercentage), volumen y cantidad de trozas comerciales con duramen, de árboles de T. grandis de plantaciones de rápido crecimiento, utilizando variables de fácil medición como diámetro a la altura de pecho (DBH), altura total (Ht) y edad. Diferentes modelos fueron utilizados para establecer las ecuaciones de los parámetros del duramen con las variables predictoras. Se muestrearon en total 54 plantaciones en cinco regiones de Costa Rica, seleccionando 3 árboles por plantación. Los modelos seleccionados para predecir el HWh, HWdiameter y para el volumen de duramen incluyen el DBH y la Ht en los modelos. Para HWh y volumen el modelo propuesto es Y= β1+β2*Ht+β4*DBH con coeficientes de correlación de R=0.85 y 0.75 respectivamente y la ecuación del perfil del fuste para determinar los diferentes HWdiameter fue diHW2DBH2=−1.56∗(hiHt−1)+0.90∗(hi2Ht2−1), con R=0.96. En relación a la cantidad de trozas con duramen (diámetro mínimo de 7 cm) y la cantidad de trozas varía de 1, en árboles de 12 a 14 cm al DBH a 8 en diámetro de 40-45 cm al DBH.
