Growing demand for a wide range of surgical procedures, coupled with a strong belief in the advantages--both to surgeons and patients--of minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery, have seen the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust open a new twin operating theatre suite, equipped with the Midlands' first da Vinci surgical robot, at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital. The two theatres, together with accompanying "preparation" and scrub facilities, and a separate five-bed recovery bay to serve several of the hospital's eight other existing main theatres, were completed to time and on budget recently by modular construction specialist, MTX Contracts, under a pound 2 million design and build contract, as HEJ editor Jonathan Baillie reports.
