[Resumo] O crescente interesse do estudo do autoconceito deve-se ao facto desta variável incidir directamente sobre o comportamento humano, nomeadamente no que se refere ao seu desempenho e ajustamento individual. O autoconceito sendo uma variável mediadora aparece, frequentemente, associado a outras variáveis, como o rendimento escolar dos alunos. Esta investigação tem como objectivo comprovar se o autoconceito, bem como algumas variáveis sociodemográficas, são relevantes na explicação do rendimento académico dos alunos. Foi seleccionada uma amostra correspondente a 217 alunos, dos 7.º, 8.º e 9.º anos de escolaridade, do 3.º ciclo do Ensino Básico de uma escola do centro do Porto. O objectivo foi orientado para a comprovação da viabilidade do modelo de equações estruturais SPSS.17/AMOS.17), onde foram hipotetizadas e especificadas determinadas relações causais. Constatou-se que o autoconceito tem um impacto positivo e significativo no rendimento académico dos alunos (Língua Portuguesa e Matemática). O estudo termina com a discussão dos resultados e sua comparação com outras investigações, remetendo para a necessidade de novas pesquisas.

[Abstract] The growing interest in self-concept study is due to the fact that this variable falls directly upon human behaviour mainly in what regards the individual performance and fitting. Being an intermediary variable, self-concept is often associated to other variables such as students’ academic performance. The goal of this investigation is to corroborate the relevancy of self-concept together with other socialdemographic variables in accounting for students’ academic achievement. A sample of 217 seventh, eighth and ninth graders (Middle School) has been selected of a school in Oporto – Portugal. The goal was oriented to test the adequacy of the structural equation model (SPSS.17/AMOS.17), on which some specific and hypothetical causal relations have been posed. The self-concept has a positive and significant impact in the academic achievement (Mother Language and Maths). The study ends with the results discussion and its comparison with parallel investigations, remitting to the necessity of new researchers.
