Abstract

[Abstract] In the region of Vega Baja del Segura, the irrigated farmland constitutes a key element in shaping the landscape. However, in recent years, the excessive urban growth of the various municipalities that make up the region, as well as the abandonment of agricultural practices, have led to the degradation of the irrigated farmland and the disappearance of the vernacular heritage linked to it, resulting in a metamorphosis of the landscape and the loss of identity in these settlements, among which the municipality of Catral stands out. This work addresses the study and proposed rehabilitation of the house known as Casa del Arrendador, located in the irrigated farmland of Catral and included within the traditional architectural typology of the alquería, characteristic of the area. The project seeks to respond to the current situation through the recovery and enhancement of this type of vernacular construction, which provides valuable lessons in sustainability thanks to its adaptation to the environment and use of local resources, shaping the landscape in which it is embedded and establishing a dialogue with it. Through this rehabilitation, a reinterpretation of the house is proposed to ensure a use that guarantees its continuity in today’s society, reinforcing its relationship with the surroundings and fostering a closer connection to agrarian life. The intervention is based on criteria that highlight the value of the pre-existing structure and take into account the principles of sustainability and passive architecture. In this way, awareness of this type of architecture is promoted, encouraging the preservation of the characteristic landscape of the Vega Baja del Segura region and its agricultural identity.
