Abstract

Durante los últimos meses se ha desarrollado un proyecto de rehabilitación en la Catedral de Santiago que permitirá disponer de una nueva capilla funeraria, destinada a enterramiento de obispos. En este sentido, se ha acondicionado un antiguo espacio de almacenaje, conformado a partir del encuentro de diferentes muros de espacios colindantes, ubicado entre la capilla de la Comunión y la capilla del Cristo de Burgos. Para el diseño de los túmulos y mobiliario litúrgico se decidió realizar un encargo al reconocido arquitecto portugués Álvaro Siza. El proyecto de Siza crea una pieza, exenta, realizada en mármol blanco, procedente de las canteras portuguesas de Estremoz, que contiene tres túmulos. Junto a ellos, la nueva capilla se completa con elementos mobiliarios de madera (mesa de altar y asientos) y una cruz de plata. También se ha incluido una talla medieval de la Virgen María, procedente de los fondos del museo catedralicio. La iluminación de la nueva capilla se conforma a partir de la luz natural que accede por los lucernarios de la bóveda, y, de manera artificial, con unas luminarias diseñadas a modo de grandes velones que iluminan indirectamente el espacio. Se trata en definitiva, de crear un espacio sacro funerario, a través de los materiales, granito y mármol, y la luz, natural y artificial.
