Revisión bibliográfica: A homosexualidade en animais

Abstract

[Resumo] A homosexualidade animal é unha conduta controvertida debido á súa relación co debate da homosexualidade humana.

[Abstract] Animal homosexuality is a controversial behaviour because of its relationship to the human homosexuality debate. Apart from that, its existence and persistence seems to be a cost for fitness. In this paper we try to find out the current status of this issue and its possible biological explanations. For this purpose, a search for information was carried out in Web of Science, ResearchGate and Google Scholar, covering publications from 1900 to April 2023. In addition, the book Biological exuberance: Animal homosexuality and natural diversity was used as support. The analysis shows a breadth of theories that provide a possible genetic/physiological or evolutionary explanation for the existence of animal homosexuality. However, there is no consensus on the subject. Moreover, these theories cannot be applied to species with exclusively homosexual individuals. Future studies on the latter could shed more light on a growing and still largely unknown topic.
