Abstract

[Resumen] En condiciones silvestres, la dieta de la nutria euroasiática se compone fundamentalmente de peces, aunque diversos tipos de presa, como el cangrejo rojo, forman parte importante de la misma como presas secundarias. La elección de una presa se hace intentando maximizar la relación beneficio/coste, como balance del aporte energético y la dificultad de captura y manejo de cada presa. En este TFG estudié una nutria en cautividad para poder observar la selección de presa en un entorno experimental controlado para estudiar si las preferencias tróficas en este tipo de hábitat se asemejan a las observadas en campo o no. Se ofrecieron a la nutria diversas alternativas de presa por parejas. La nutria prefirió consumir peces muertos y autóctonos de cualquier tamaño. Los cangrejos fueron siempre rechazados. Los resultados se discutieron en el marco teórico de la TFO (Teoría del Forrajeo Óptimo). Se concluyó que los factores que determinan la dieta de Lutra lutra en su hábitat natural no son los mismos que en cautividad, puesto que las necesidades energéticas no son las mismas. Además, la nutria muestra habituación hacia la presa que se le suministra habitualmente. El pequeño tamaño muestral de este trabajo se debió a las restricciones impuestas por la pandemia.

[Resumo] En condicións silvestres, a dieta da lontra euroasiática componse fundamentalmente de peixes, aínda que diversos tipos de presa, como o cangrexo vermello, forman parte importante da mesma como presas secundarias. A selección dunha presa faise tentando maximizar a relación beneficio/custo, como balance da achega enerxética e a dificultade de captura e manexo de cada presa. Neste TFG estudei unha lontra en catividade para poder observar a elección de presa nunha contorna experimental controlada para estudar se as preferencias tróficas neste tipo de hábitat aseméllanse ás observadas en campo ou non. Ofrecéronse á lontra diversas alternativas de presa por parellas. A londra preferiu consumir peixes mortos e autóctonos de calquera tamaño. Os cangrexos foron sempre rexeitados. Os resultados discutíronse no marco teórico da TFO (Teoría do Forraxeo Óptimo). Concluíuse que os factores que determinan a dieta de Lutra lutra no seu hábitat natural non son os mesmos que en catividade, posto que as necesidades enerxéticas non son as mesmas. Ademais a londra mostra habituación cara á presa que se lle ofrece habitualmente. O pequeno tamaño de mostra deste traballo debeuse ás restricións impostas pola pandemia.

[Abstract] In the wild, the diet of the Eurasian otter consists primarily of fish, although various types of prey, such as the red crayfish, form an important part of the diet as secondary prey. The choice of prey is made trying to maximise the benefit/cost ratio, as a balance of energy intake and the difficulty of capture and handling of each prey item. In this dissertation I studied an otter in captivity in order to observe prey choice in a controlled experimental environment to study whether trophic preferences in this type of habitat resemble those observed in the field or not. The otter was offered a variety of prey choices in pairs. Otter preferred to consume dead and native fish of all sizes. Crayfishes were always rejected. The results were discussed within the theoretical framework of OFT (Optimal Foraging Theory). I concluded that the factors determining the diet of Lutra lutra in the wild are not the same as in captivity, as energy requirements are not the same either. In addition, otter showed habituation towards the prey they are habituated to. The small sample size of this work was due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic.
