Abstract

[Abstract] Introduction. Chronic venous insufficiency is that long-term pathological situation derived from anatomical or functional alterations of the venous system that is manifested by signs and symptoms. Its main signs and symptoms are pain, edema and venous dilations that are accompanied by valve insufficiency. Hydrotherapy as a therapeutic tool uses its mechanical or thermal properties such as hydrostatic pressure or the Archimedean principle. No studies have been found in the available literature that support the effects of aquatic physiotherapy for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, so we ask ourselves if it really is useful for patients. Objective. The main objective is to determine the efficacy of hydrotherapy compared to the usual physiotherapy treatment in a dry environment and to check if signs and symptoms decrease in patients with chronic venous insufficiency in phase C3 or higher. Methodology. An open randomized controlled clinical trial of parallel groups will be carried out in patients diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency in phase C3 or higher at the San José health center in A Coruña. Participants will be randomized to either an intervention group (hydrotherapy) or a control group (dry medium physiotherapy) n = 47 per group. The subjects assigned to the intervention group will be part of a hydrotherapy program that will last three months, 3 days a week, with sessions lasting 60 minutes. The intervention will be carried out by means of therapeutic exercise in a swimming pool while the control group will carry it out dry. Measurements will be taken before the study begins and at the end of the pain, the quality of life and the perimeter of the lower limbs. The study will be conducted after approval by an accredited ethics committee, requesting informed consent from the participants.
