Abstract

[Abstract] The central gustatory system has been widely studied in some teleostean groups such as cyprinids and ictalurids, however this system is mostly unknown in elasmobranchs. With the aim of describing the main gustative and visceral integration centers and its afferent projections in cartilaginous fish in the present study we have chosen the lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) as a representative species for this group, in which we carried out tract-tracing experiments using the lipophilic carbocyanine dye DiI. Our results showed a few efferent projections from the primary centers, coursing along an ascending tract, the secondary gustatory tract, that ends at the isthmal level. The location of the putative secondary gustatory nucleus was also infered by its hypothalamic projection. The scarcity of neurons in the secondary gustatoy nucleus suggests that elasmobranchs posses a reduced gustatory system compared to most teleostean fish.
