Abstract

The increase of older people in society is growing significantly. In Spain, population ageing is very noticeable. Policy formulation, actions and regulations to cover the needs and protection of the elderly are fundamental in obtaining active aging and therefore responding with organized actions to promote wellbeing in the latter part of life. Based on this concept, a network of health services is available including nursing homes or residential services that provide comprehensive care aimed at the elderly. Within these services, occupational therapy plays an important role in promoting the health of the elderly. Strengthening productive activities, among other procedures and therapeutic approaches, provides better quality of life and greater wellbeing. Research aims to explore and describe the experience of participation among the elderly who are institutionalized when participating in a volunteering activity, specifically a beneficent market. Qualitative methodology through phenomenological research will be used in this study. It will be based on the use of observational and conversational techniques such as semi-structured interviews and self-reports. The subjects of the study will be people who are 60 or over, family, occupational therapists and nursing home staff.
