Abstract

EN the book deals with the impact of international non-governmental organizations in the postwar period in the city of Mostar , Bosnia-Herzegovina. The text is based on extensive field research undertaken between 1998 and 2001, mainly with interviews to local and international NGO personnel, beneficiaries, social activists and public figures in the city. The research uses a methodology leaned towards a micro-sociological analysis of NGO work; data collection and analysis were done following the Grounded Theory approach. Main results of the research were: a reassessment of current peacebuilding models, focusing on the importance of peace potential; the identification of conflict transformation practices based on empowerment, where external actors served as catalysts for action of local constituencies; the identification of “dissociative” peace practices, aimed at a separate positive evolution within the two main ethnic groups, without rushing towards cooperative actions among them. The research assessed in positive terms the contribution of NGOs in the city of Mostar, particularly in the field of youth work, women empowerment and mediation / democratization.
