Scritture di libri, scritture di notai

Abstract

This article examines some cases of notaries who were also scribes (mainly from thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Florence). The goal is to verify whether and to what degree the scribal choices made in the copying of a book were influenced or, indeed, shaped by their parallel professional experience. At the same time, these few samples offer an occasion for a discussion about the meaning and chronology of the use in the codex of cursive script of notarial origin, which is the most significant phenomenon in the history of Italian and European script of the late Middle Ages.
