The high value of a vineyard makes necessary a wise water resources and land management. The climatic change, with average haigh temperature, rainfall reduction and extreme events, is a significant obstacle to the sustainable management of soil and water resources. A deep knowledge of the different aspects characterising the rainfall is crucial for a better knowledge of the soil runoff dynamics and hydrological balance and it is of fundamental importance for a proper land planning and managment. To define the link between the rain physical properties and their effect on soil, and experimental site has been set up on the Chianti hills, in order to have contemporary measurements of runoff and rainfall parameters. The ivineyard has been instrumented for measuring runoff rate and collecting an integrated sample of runoff during each rainfall event. The physical properties of the rainfall have been analyzed in order to corelate them to soil hydrological dynamic. The results show the potentiality of the physical approach to evaluate the rainfall kinetic energy and its effectiveness in the soil loss and hydrological balance prediction.
