Abstract

L'Etimologico ABSTRACT The Dictionary contains the etymologies of 48,000 words, all the affixes of Italian included, a Preface about the scientific methods, a glossary of the scientific terms and a large bibliography. From the methodological point of view, the most important novelty is the fact that the etymological research ends only when the original motivation is possibly achieved. If it is an item belonging to the Latin heritage and tracing back to the prehistory of Latin, its original motivation is retrieved through the comparison of the Indo-European lexicon. If it is a loanword, all the stages of its itinerary are crossed backwards till the language that represents the starting point. In the Dictionary there are more than 300 new etymologies and more than hundred rejected etymologies, that have been recovered. The Dictionary is endowed with a CD-Rom and can be referred to online under licence.
