This paper illustrates the main characteristics of the border lines separating the current territory of the Italian Republic from the mainland European states; it focuses on the operations to maintain these borders; clarifies the meaning and limits of the so-called "mobile border", introduced into contemporary vocabulary following the first melting phenomena of the Alpine glaciers; and, in conclusion, offers some general and specific considerations on the very idea of a border.
