The professionalism and role of the cataloguer has been questioned in Italy for at least three decades. Its crisis is not new and it was and it is not only Italian. Despite the fact that the library world is aware of the rapidly changing digital ecosystem in which it operates and of the need to rapidly adapt its tools to what is defined as the bibliographical transformation, the lack in many libraries of highly specialised personnel and of financial resources to set up technological infrastructures prevents cataloguing from being adapted to contemporary needs.
