Atlante iconografico. La Commedia dell'Arte

Abstract

Commedia dell'Arte has had an enormous fortune in the visual arts. Originating in Italy, but quickly spreading to numerous European countries between the mid-sixteenth century and the end of the eighteenth century, this spectacular form has been, to this day, a source of inspiration for numerous artists. The iconographic heritage dedicated to it can be quantified in over a thousand works, created for different purposes and by means of the most diverse artistic techniques: from drawing to engraving, from painting to porcelain and sculpture. This Atlas aims, through a targeted selection of images, to highlight some of the fundamental episodes that over the centuries have marked the development of the figurative myth of the Commedia dell'Arte, capable of surviving the same spectacular form and still active in this glimpse of the new millennium.
