Abstract

// The essay traces the events of the 14th-century decoration of the Florentine Badia, which was completely disrupted by the 16th-century renovation of the building, which also included the rotation of the main axis. The research focused on the study of surviving fragments in parts that are inaccessible today, such as the attic and the interspaces of the sixteenth-century wall face, and the analysis of photographs taken during restorations that have, among other things, unearthed fragments of the fresco decoration of the ancient main chapel by Giotto. The study made it possible to reconstruct the exact arrangement of the fragments on the walls, laying the groundwork for a future, virtual, 3-D reconstruction of this lost space that housed one of Giotto's most impressive fresco cycles. The same methodology of investigation was applied to the study of the fragments of the two side chapels, painted by Nardo di Cione in the 1360s.
