Abstract

The Comedia del viaje del hombre, preserved in a manuscript dated 1584 from the Biblioteca de Palacio in Madrid, is one of the earliest religious plays by Lope de Vega. It was probably staged by the troupe lead by Jerónimo Velázquez, with whom Lope maintained a close relationship up until his stormy breakup with Elena Osorio. The text develops a key motif in the religious theatre of Philip II's era: the bivium of human life, symbolized by the Pythagorean Y. The article addresses the dramatic presentation of the bivium in the aforementioned comedy by relating it to two other religious plays from the second half of the sixteenth century. These texts also revolve around the moral crossroads in the pilgrimage of man in the world: the anonymous Églogaintitulada Viaje del cielo and El viaje del alma, one of the four autos included by Lope in El peregrino en su patria.
